Steps to Apply

How to Apply for Financial Aid

  1. Create a Federal Student Aid (FSA) ID:

Students sign up for a Federal Student Aid (FSA) ID, which is used every year on the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) form and Master Promissory Notes (MPNs) for federal student loans.

    Create an FSA ID

  2. Complete the FAFSA: The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is used to determine eligibility for federal financial aid (including work-study) and is required if you wish to borrow federal student loans. DU's school code for the FAFSA is 001371. We highly recommend using the IRS Data Retrieval Tool, which will quickly import your tax information directly into the FAFSA.

    Submit the FAFSA

    Which FAFSA should I submit?
    • If you're starting in the 2025 winter, spring, or summer term, submit the 2024-2025 FAFSA.
    • If you're starting in the fall of 2025 or later, submit the 2025-2026 FAFSA (available December 2024).

  3. Submit Supporting Documentation: Occasionally, we need to ask for additional documentation to verify that the information on your application is accurate. If further information is required, we’ll send you an email identifying the documentation you must provide. You must submit all requested documents before we can finalize your financial aid offer. Outstanding requirements are available on your My4D dashboard

  4. View and Accept Your Financial Aid Offer: Once you apply for financial aid and submit all supporting documents, you receive your financial aid offer via My4D, outlining the types of financial aid offered and your estimated cost of attendance for the academic year. To receive your aid, you must actively accept the offer, which you can also do through My4D.

Priority Deadlines

When to Submit Your FAFSA

  • Incoming students applying for winter, spring, or summer 2025 admission: No priority deadline—students should apply as soon as possible.
  • Incoming students applying for fall 2025 admission: February 1
  • Returning students: March 15

Why Apply by the Priority Deadline?

New students who submit the FAFSA by the priority deadline will receive a financial aid offer soon after an admission decision. If you miss the deadline, that's OK! You won't miss out on funding, but your financial aid offer may be delayed. Just be sure to submit your FAFSA as soon as possible.
